I applaud the State of Indiana’s efforts to build a budget transparency portal (Editorial: Make budget numbers, priorities clear). Citizens deserve an easily accessible and understandable one stop place to review budgets, revenue and expense numbers, contracts, and any other type of government spending.
The same model should be applied at the local level as well. As mayor, I will make sure residents of Hammond have the ability to review all budgets, contracts, casino money, and special events such as the Festival of the Lakes. In addition, this information will be updated every 30 days and easily accessible and clear. An open government is an honest government, one that eliminates any waste, fraud, or abuse. An open government will also give the citizens what they deserve, accountability.
